Some of the SMG Lake Martin team joined up with members of the SMG Atlanta team to do some coaching at the Ritz Carlton on Lake Oconee this weekend. We had a great turn out, filling 7 boats for 2 days, with 2 – two hour sessions per day. There were both kids and parents participating in the clinic and all of which had a great time. There were all levels of riders and all of them had progression along with a ton of fun. I had the Wakesurf boat with a full quiver of Victoria wakesurfers. Everyone of my riders got up and I’d say half got to surf with out the rope and in the amount of time we had, a great feat! Wakesurfing is still new to a lot of people, most of my riders hadn’t seen it before. All of them wanted to do it again.. and again which is a great sign of where wakesurfing is going. A sport which the entire family can enjoy. Being able to pick the correct board size for each participant was key and in almost every session each rider I had rode a different board. I would have to say one of the most important parts of surfing is getting the proper sized board for the rider for the wake he/she rides. To elaborate a little, I have seen riding styles make a huge difference in this regard.
A rider CAN surf the wake, but may prefer something smaller or larger. Going to a smaller board can make tricks easier but too small will not allow you to keep drive, conversely too large will make them a harder to maneuver around, and make the rider have to “brake” constantly. We used every size from the largest 56.7 ” Victoria – the Bigfoot, to the smallest I had which was a 48? Foamie. It was an amazing weekend. I had a great time and look forward to doing it again!
